1962 A. Christopher Ross 7/8 5-String Upright Bass – Rare Low G Extension

We are offering for sale an exceptionally rare, custom-built 5-string double bass, hand-carved in 1962 by luthier Arthur Christopher Ross of Moscow, Idaho. This is a powerful 7/8 size instrument built for a professional orchestral player, featuring a one-of-a-kind modification.

This bass is a true five-string (B-E-A-D-G) instrument, but its most unique feature is a custom-made “Low G Extension” built onto the low B-string. This is an extremely rare, specialized mechanism that allows the player to reach notes below the standard low B, all the way down to a G0. This modification provides an unparalleled tonal range for the most demanding orchestral repertoire.

The bass is fully carved and, at 7/8 size, it has the large voice, presence, and powerful fundamental that professional players seek. The 1962 build date places it in a prime period of the maker’s work.
